During the French Revolution, Captain Stephen Clough created a plan to spring Marie Antoinette from prison, hide her aboard his ship, the Sally, and set sail for Wiscasset, Maine. Many of the queen’s possessions were loaded onto the Sally, including vases, clocks, a bed, tapestries and her royal cats. However, when it came time to rescue Marie Antoinette, she refused to go without her son. So, Captain Clough set sail for Wiscassett without his royal houseguest.
One thing you should know about Maine: There are cats everywhere!!! When I first moved here, I was fascinated by this fact. It even drove me to create a series of oddball illustrations.
